Fast Food Comic Strip (FFN #3)
This comic strip, titled “Happy Eating’s” by Tom Briscoe shows the “behind the scenes” details of the fast food industry, McDonalds to be more precise. This comic strip shows how the fast food industries make children want to eat their food because of the free toys that come with the meal, makes adults mad with how greasy and fattening the food is and really distorts children’s minds about eating healthy. I think this comic strip is hilarious because of how bluntly true it is…children wanting happy meals, parents getting mad, and parents wanting to sue.
I think Eric Schlosser would love this comic strip! He would love it because this is his book, just in picture form. Mcdonalds is the subject of this comic strip, and it appeals to adults mostly but also children, because it is a comic strip. The purpose of the speaker, tom Briscoe is to inform everyone and to entertain everyone. The tone of the comic strip is informing but yet making you laugh at how true it is.
Farmers bet ‘green’ eatery will catch on (FFN #2)
In the article “Farmers bet ‘green’ eatery will catch on” by Mary Clare Jalonick in The Associated Press she informs us about a “farm-to-table” restaurant, that sells food straight from family farms. It is amazing how eco-friendly the restaurant is. For example, according to the article, “An old West Virginia farm house is incorporated into the interior, and floors and tables are fashioned from trees that fell on their own — without being cut down — in Wisconsin. Menus are printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink and the restaurant is flooded with natural light.” This shows that the new family farm restaurants are a very good thing for our envirnment. I agee with the article, about building more eco-friendly restaurants, and their start to building those restaurants is a good start.
The main subject of the article is the “farm-to-table” restaurants or family farm restaurants and how they are good. The date of this article September 28, 2008 and it talks mostly about states in the east. The srticle is refering to anyone, that eats at restaurants. The purpose of the article is to inform us about these family farm restaurants and to suggest us to go to them. The speaker is Mary Clare Jalonick. I think the tone of this article is informative, that there are restaurants out there that help the environment and that are healthy for you. Scholosser would agree with this piece because he has a strong belief that fast food restaurants are bad for the environment and for you, and this arctilce points out an alternative to fast food restaurants, which is family farm restaurants.

In the article “Iowas files child labor charges against meat plant” by Henry C. Jackson in The Associated Press he points out tons of the dangerous jobs children under that age of eighteen are doing in the meat company. It is astonishing how the meatpacking company gets away with all the things they get away with, they do not care for the safety of their employees and they have a big number of employees that are illegal-immigrants. They have some workers that are under the age of sixteen and even some that are fourteen. This just shows how dysfunctional the meat packaging company is, they should have stricter laws and more laws against the meat packaging company.
This article informs that “32 illegal-immigrant children under the age of eighteen, including seven who were younger than sixteen” were working at the meat plant in Iowa. The workers were handling dangerous equipment and chemicals such as chlorine solutions and dry ice. Many of the employees at the plant said they were as young as fourteen when they started working at the plant. The main subject of the article is the meatpacking plant and its under aged, illegal-immigrant workers doing dangerous jobs. The occasion or setting of the article is in Iowa, September 9, 2008. The piece is directed to the public. The purpose is to inform, acknowledge and to report. The speaker is Henry C. Jackson. The tone of the speaker is very informative, he give shocking facts, that make you angry with the meat packing company. The article relates to chapter eight, The Most Dangerous Job in “Fast Food Nation”. It talks about how dangerous the jobs are in the meat packaging company. Eric Schlosser would agree with this article, that the young workers should not be working with the dangerous equipment. Schlosser was saying how dangerous the meatpacking company is and this article points out the dangerous equipment young workers are using.
